The ad ran all weekend and cost what it cost. On Monday somebody scrolled back up the comments, answered the ones still worth answering, and guessed at the rest.

What it connects

The gap it closes

An ad is the one piece of marketing you have already paid for before anyone sees it. Then it runs, people argue and ask and tag their friends underneath it, and all of that is worth money only if somebody answers it. Usually somebody does, the next morning, scrolling back up a thread that has moved on. Here the comments on the ad itself are answered while the ad is still running, and the people who bought, booked or went quiet are handed back to Facebook as the audience your next campaign spends on.

Where it fits

Reach for it when you pay Facebook to put something in front of people. It suits a business running campaigns often enough that the last one should shape the next. You connect the page you advertise from. It is switched on with your connected tools, not in the planner.

You will find it under Settings → Integrations → Facebook, which is the same tile your Instagram account uses. A chat bubble is added to each site or page you want it on, one per platform. Facebook asks for around a hundred matched people before an audience you send across can be advertised to.

Questions

What people ask

We spend on Facebook ads. What does this change about them?

What happens underneath them. The comments on a paid post are answered as they are left, not gathered up the next day. The money went on getting people to react, so the reaction is the part worth catching.

Can it work on an ad, or only on things we post normally?

Either. A normal post is picked off your timeline, and an ad is pointed at directly. That second one is the reason most people set this up at all.

What do we do with people once the campaign is over?

Put them back in front of Facebook. Your customers and enquiries go across as an audience. The next campaign is aimed at people who look like the ones who already said yes.

Someone lands on our website with a question. Where do they ask it?

In a Messenger bubble on the page, if you put one there. They ask on your site and the reply reaches them in the app they keep open. The conversation carries on after they have left.

Do people have to type out a proper reply to us?

Not usually. A message can carry buttons to tap and short answers to pick from. Choosing takes a thumb rather than a sentence, and whoever answers arrives with their first and last name.
