The enquiry runs to four paragraphs and nobody has read it yet. It waits for whoever has ten minutes, and by the time somebody does, the answer is late and the reading still has not happened.

What it connects

The gap it closes

There is a job in every day that only a person can do and nobody has time for. The long enquiry that has to be read properly before anyone can answer it. The message that has to be turned into a plain summary of what this person actually wants. It sits there waiting for whoever has ten minutes, and ten minutes never arrives. Manus takes that job off the pile: it is handed the work, it does it, and what it produced comes back for the next step to use.

Where it fits

Sits where a piece of work has to be done before anyone can act on it.

Questions

What people ask

What sort of work can I hand over?

The judgement jobs that land on a person. Reading something long and summarising it. Working out what a customer is actually asking for. Producing a piece of writing from what you already hold. You give the instruction, the work is done, and what comes back is used in the next step.

What does asking it to carry on mean?

It means a second instruction on the same piece of work. Rather than starting again, it builds on what it already produced. You narrow it, correct it, or ask for the next part. The work has a memory of itself, which is what makes a real job possible.

How long does the work take?

Within minutes, not the instant you ask. Real work takes a moment, and this is real work rather than a canned reply. The rest of the sequence waits for it and then carries on. Plan it where a short pause costs nothing, and it will feel like the job was simply done.

What happens to what it produced?

It comes back to the sequence that asked for it, and goes into whatever runs next. That is usually the email or the message that goes out to the customer. The summary lands in the note, the writing lands in the reply. Nobody copies it across.

We already have something reading and writing for us. Is this the same?

It answers a different question. One piece of reading or writing inside a step that is already running is one thing. This is a job handed over, worked on, and returned, with follow-up questions possible on the same work. Businesses often want both, and they sit together.
